Officials unable to cope the enormous number of flood victims still pouring into schools, gymnasiums, churches and other makeshift shelters as the death toll from weekend disaster soared to 246.

The death toll jumped after authorities finally recording those killed in Manila, and not just the neighboring regions. The latest toll was 246 over 100 more than Monday's assesment.
The Department of Health (DOH) is concerned that overcrowding will hasten the spread of water-borne diseases. Monday the DOH has already conducted assessments of some 207 evacuation centers set up in flood-hit areas that showed marked water and hygiene problems.
PREVENT WATER-BORNE DISEASES.
>Wash hands before preparing food and after using the toilet.
>Boiling drinking water for 2 or more minutes or do water chlorination.
>Avoid wading in flood water. If you must, wear a rubber boots.
>Avoid wading and taking baths in flood waters.
>Clean up all possible mosquito breeding sites, such as vases, empty coconut shells, old tires, or tin cans.
>Stay inside a house or building during heavy rains.
>When a flood advisory is issued, residents in low-lying areas should seek higher ground.
>Avoid crossing low-lying areas and bridges during evacuation.
The Comission on Higher Education (CHED) said Wednesday that classes at the tertiary level in Metro Manila and other places under a state of calamity will remain suspended until Saturday.
Colleges and Universities are being encouraged to become centers that will receive aid and donations to help the typhoon victim. The CHED also announced that nursing students and Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) cadets would be asked to report to help in government's clean up drive and relief operations in devastated areas.
By Tuesday tonnes of food aid as well as foreign experts were on their way to the Philippines.
After admitting it could not cope on its own, the government on Monday appealed to the international community for help.
Among the first nations to respond, Australia, the United States, France and Japan said they had sent pledged support for relief efforts.

Beijing’s Bird’s Nest shopping complex
The area around Beijing’s massive Bird’s Nest stadium will be turned into a shopping and entertainment complex in three to five years, a state news agency said.
Officially known as Beijing National Stadium, the showpiece of the Beijing Olympics has fallen into disuse since the end of the games. Paint is already peeling in some areas, and the only visitors these days are tourists who pay about $7 to walk on the stadium floor and browse a pricey souvenir shop.
Plans call for the $450 million stadium to anchor a complex of shops and entertainment outlets in three to five years, citing operator Citic Group.
The only confirmed event at the 91,000-seat stadium this year is Puccini’s opera “Turandot,” set for Aug. 8—the one-year anniversary of the Olympics’ opening ceremony. The stadium has no permanent tenant after Beijing’s top soccer club, Guo’an, backed out of a deal to play there.
A symbol of China’s rising power and confidence, the stadium, whose nickname described its lattice of exterior steel beams, may never recoup its hefty construction cost, particularly amid a global economic crisis. Maintenance of the structure alone costs about $8.8 million annually, making it difficult to turn a profit.

Intel Philippines is closing its manufacturing plant in cavity by year end, Intel announced a billion dollar fab in china tha fave the way of speculation. The reasons vary — from high corporate taxes, to expensive electricity charges and even stealing of microchips. Other's says it’s about the structural integrity of the Cavite plant (that’s why the Laguna TechnoPark was an option). Intel may be really moving most of its Asian operations to China. That’s where cheap labor is abundant. Intel still has assembly test sites in Kulim & Penang, Malaysia, Pudong & Chengdu, China and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

World's Oldest Woman dies at 115
The world'soldest woman who lived to see five of her great-great grandchildren born, has dies at 115.
Maria se Jesus died in an ambulance near the central Portuguese town of Tomar, town council officials said.
She is a Guiness Book of World Records as the World's oldest woman. That Title now falls to American,114 years old Gertrude Baines, who live in Los Angeles Nursing Home.
Maria de Jesus was born in September 10, 1893, and wedowed at 57, outlived three of her six children, had 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
On friday she was taken to hospital because of swelling, after she ate her breakfast normally according to her daughter Maria Madalena. De Jesus was 115 years and 144 days old.
According to Dr. Stephen Coles a gerontologist of the Gerontology Research Group at the University of California, Los Angeles, there are 82 women and 9 men verified being 110 or older. But he said there could be hundreds more in places like China, India, or Africa where they would not have caught the attention of the Gerontology Research Group, a small volunteer that tracks supercentenarians and verifies their birth dates through birth certificates and other documents.
Coles said the supercentenarians appear to share one trait that might account for their longevity- they come from families whose members are longlived.
"Whether they drink alcohol or not, it doesn't matter. Whether they smoke cigarettes or not, doesn't seem to matter," he said. "The thing that does seem to matter is that they chose their parents wisely." "It's in the genes. It's in the DNA," he said.
The new title holder of the World's oldest woman was Baines, born in Georgia on April 6, 1894. Her only daughter died at age 18. She spent most of her life in Ohio, worked as a housekeeper at Ohio State University in Columbus, Coles said. Coles asked the staff at Western Convalescent Hospital to tell Baines she is now the oldest living documented woman in the world.
"She is very healthy. Her only complaint, is arthritis in her left knee," She uses wheel chair, he said. "Baines was mentally sharp, saying " she doesn't forget anything."
Baines voted her last November Presidential Election, the Los Angeles Times reported.

BANANA CRAZE IN JAPAN
The Philippines should move faster and purposely to fill the shortage of bananas in the shelves of Japan, where the "Banana Morning Diet" has a big craze.
Due to the growing popularity of the Banana Morning Diet, Rep. Emmylou Talinio-Mendoza said that over the last six months, bananas have been flying off supermarket racks in Japan faster show they would be replenished.
Created by a pharmacist in Osaka, the Banana Morning Diet has become Fashionable in Japan on account of strong endorsement by celebrities there who have testimony about their sudden loss of weight.
The regimen starts with a banana with a glass of room temperature water for breakfast and anything for lunch and dinner. Desserts are not allowed after meals. A mid afternoon snack is fine. One must have a dinner at 8 p.m. and go to bed before midnight.

After Ecuador, Philippines is the world's biggest banana exporter, with a global market share of 16%. Last year the country shipped out around 1.905 million metric tons of $440 million worth of banana, or P18.1 billion based on $1:41.14 exchange rate at the end of 2007.
The Philippines' 2007 export banana volume was only 40 percent of the 4.65 million metric ton shipped out by Ecuador of the same year. Ecuador was 34 percent of the global banana export market in 2007.
Besides Ecuador, the Philippines' other rivals in banana export markets are India, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Costa Rica and Mexico.

6 Chinese go on trial for selling melamine
Six Chinese suspects went on trial Friday accuse of making and selling the industrial chemical at the center of the tainted milk scandal blamed for killing six children and sickening nearly 300,000 others.
Among those in court Friday was the owner of a workshop that was allegedly the country's largest source of melamine, the substance responsible for the health crisis that also saw Chinese food products pulled from stores worldwide, state media said.
Police say Zhang Yujun, 40, ran a workshop on the outskirts of Jinan in eastern Shandong province that manufactured and sold a "protein powder" compose mainly of melamine and malt dextrin, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. The powder was added to watered-down milk to make it appear higher in protein content.
Prosecutors in the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court accused Zhang of producing 776 tons of the additive powder from October 2007 through August 2008, making it the largest source of melamine in the country. He allegdly sold more that 600 tons with a total value of $1 million, the court heard.
In the same case, a second man, Zhang Yanzhang, 24, was accuse of buying and reselling 230 tons of powder to others.
State televition showed both men in court in hand cuffs with their heads bowed while being questioned by three judges. It was noy immediately clear what penalties they face.
An official at the publicity office of Hebei Supreme Courts across Hebei province for adding the chemical to raw milk and then selling it to Sanlu Group Co., the main company in the scandal, according to Xinhua.
Melamine can artificially inflate protein levels and was apparently added to watered-down milk to fool quality inspectors while boosting profits.
Zhang Heshe and Zhang Taizhen were accused of adding 35 kilograms of the "protein powder" to 70 tons of raw milk and then selling it to Sanlu. Yang Jingmin ang Gu Guoping were also charged with adding 24 kilograms and 16.7 kilograms of melamine, respectively.
The verdicts will be announced at an unspecified date, Xinhua reported.
