LPG Safe Cooking

Most of the households in the Philippines are using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) particularly in urban and suburban areas in the country. To the full working Mother and wife , one hurriedly sending husband to work and children to school every morning, wakeup early and ease and swiftness is for cooking and LPG, is a necessary. Well, there maybe backwater places in the countryside of which still using firewood are used but I surmise majority of the Filipino household today use LPG.
However, not all are acquainted in the right handling of LPG, the threat it poses to life and limbs when careless and neglectful.
In the house we are using a safety gadget to prevent the accident, and we always make sure that the LPG valve is always closed after every use.
When the Prices of LPG soar high, we use firewood that we accumulated from our farm as a reserve when we don't have LPG..

Here are some safety tips from experts in properly handling the LPG to avoid unnecessary damages:

1. Do not store LPG cylinders in enclosed kitchen cabinet without proper ventilation.
2. Keep LPG cylinders away from electrical points and other sources of fire and ignition.
3. Do not invert LPG cylinders or let it lie horizontally on the floor.
4. Use only LPG resistant rubber hoses with clamps and regularly check for water, cracks and leaks.

If you smell gas in your kitchen:

1. Do not switch on/off electrical switches or connect/ disconnect electrical plugs.
2. open all doors and improve ventilation.
3. Turn off regulators and remove cylinders. Use soapy water to test for leaks.
4. If cylinders is leaking, move it out to open and well-ventilated place.

Authorities also advise consumers to buy only LPG with cylinder bearing the PS Quality Mark and check if security seal is intact and firmly affixe to the valve. LPG must be checked if it has correct weight. The government requires retailers of LPG to have weighing scales in their stores. Consumers are advised to report to the Department of Energy (DOE) any underweighing and adultercation cases.
Yes , it is now very comfortable to cook our favorite dishes using LPG fuel, an advantage we have over forefathers. But let us not always forget to think of the safety of our families and our properties.
